Ben Johnson
Unpopular opinion, but sadly he's not good enough.

Yes, he had a few good games earlier in the season but overall he's not good enough.

Too many times he shows his man on the inside, his distribution is absolutely shocking and when he has the ball at his feet, he just looks scared.

He's been bang average bar from the odd game, Vexed son.

He's played that position enough times now, to understand what he needs to do.

Re: Ben Johnson
Blimey. He has looked a bit shit but he's been thrown into a couple of tough games of late and played out of position. Doesn't look great on the ball but can defend well and is physically up to the task so I wouldn't write him off just yet.

Don't underestimate how hard it is to play on the opposite flank if you're a right footed player being stuffed on the left by a manager who has already conceded the game so the lad got no respite. I think he might come good.

Re: Ben Johnson
Antonio isn't a natural striker, he's done fucking well considering.

To suggest an professional player cannot adjust from 1 side to the other, is just fucking laughable. I put this down to him being an academy player, which means he's immune from any criticism.

He also played left back for the U23's as well, Trundle. So my point he's played left back for a few seasons isn't actually wrong. Not debated that he wasn't an right back originally, odd you seem to miss this.

Re: Ben Johnson
"Loan him for "a few years"? Nonsense."

Exactly. We have a paper thin squad, and people want to get rid of a player who's played 10 times (most of the time pretty admirably) for us this season when we've been in dire need because of injuries?

Yeah lets stick him out on loan an rely of Fredericks and Masuaku.

Re: Ben Johnson
He hasn't played there for a good few seasons.

He isn't a natural left back.

How many times do you need to be told something before you acknowledge it?

Re: Ben Johnson
How do we not know he prefers to play LB?

He's been playing there for a good few seasons now, so it's not alien to him.

He played well a few times earlier in the season, didn't hear anyone moaning about that then?

This showing inside stuff is nonsense, your inviting the player to cut in and shoot, if you force them wide you have the touch line and byline and forcing them further away from goal.

And as others have said, dont crucify HIM for being played out of position.

Re: Ben Johnson
Loan him for "a few years"? Nonsense. He's 21 NOW. English. Comes good soon or we might as well sell... And we'd spend £10-£15m replacing him unless we were lucky.

He's a good player. Seems loyal, too. He wasn't great at Manchester United but, thanks to Moyes, whole team was all over the shop.

Have some faith in the young man, please!! Irons.

In general you are now coached to show your man on the inside. It's on the premise that you usually have another player on your inside that can cover. On your outside there is noone if you're the full back.

Yes there are exceptions depending on that specific attack and what is the stronger foot of the opponent. Showing your man down the outside as the norm stopped in the 1990s.

Re: Ben Johnson
The kid is a right back

We have one of the best right backs in the league and a pretty shit hot kid right back who we let go because we had Johnson and Fredericks

He was third in line behind Fredricks but because of versatility has moved into the first team ahead of Fredericks and played on the left

He is now a solid back up to Coufal or to creswell in a 442

He can play wingback either side too

Against Man Utd he appeared to play left wing and then right wing. He is not a winger.

We are lucky to have him in the squad. He is a good kid that will only get better.

So he misplaced a few passes against Manchester United who sit second.

Let's write off his career eh? BURN HIM!

Re: Ben Johnson
This is based on his last 2 games in which he was a bit poor. But they were against Man City and ManU. I’d give more games before jumping to this conclusion.

Re: Ben Johnson
I think he's decent. But hes not a left wing back . I'd rather play Bowen there. I'd loan him to a championship side next season. So he gains experience he's too good for League one he's already shown that.

Re: Ben Johnson
He is young, needs to go on loan to League 1 club for few years. He is nowhere near PL level yet but has potential.

Moyes is a cunt for throwing him in like this and damaging his confidence.

He needs time but I’m not convinced he’ll get it here. He’s shown some real promise at times.

Re: Ben Johnson
With Coufal now the first choice right back , I suppose it could end up with him moving on if he cannot make another position his own or get enough game time / be prepared to be more of a bench or utility man for a few years?

In an ideal world he would be the successor eventually to Coufal ( 29 next birthday so no spring chicken) but in the meantime act as the understudy because right back is really his position although I think I also read he was once a right winger? Until he plays in his preferred position its harsh to be too critical of him IMO.

And besides, if we want to progress we need a squad not just a first 11 so lets hope we keep him as he has most of the attributes needed like strength and pace and in some games his passing has actually been very good. It was not yesterday but overall he did ok I thought

Dr Matt 5:54 Mon Mar 15
Re: Ben Johnson
With Fredericks and Coufal we should just give him a full season on loan. Then let him challenge Coufal.

Or he fails on loan and we buy Aarons.

Re: Ben Johnson
His distribution has generally been awful, and given his position, when he gives it away it is always to dangerous players. He could come good, and as others have said, he only plays against top 6 teams when Moyes shits himself and turns into Allardyce.

Difficult to say whether he's good enough or not having only seen him play against top quality players and being out of position. However, his distribution and passing does concern me, but that might just be nerves? No point writing him off just yet, but I'd hope to see him on loan to a Championship side next season.

IN YOUR OPINION, it's ill informed.

I get it now, we can only post about west ham when you agree with the sentiments of the thread.

At Least I know for future reference.

Block, do your feel your IQ drop every day or does it just happen without you realising?

An idiotic thread from an ill-informed moron could do without being published whether it's about West Ham or not.
